We hear so much tech talk these days, and let’s be honest—it can feel brain-frying and a bit overwhelming. But here’s the thing: while you don’t need to be a tech expert, you do need to know just enough to work with these tools confidently.

Think of it like the apps on your phone. You don’t need to know how they were built or coded, but to get the most out of them, you do need to know what they are, which ones are worth using, how to download them, and the best way to make them work for you.

In our workshops, we find that even a basic understanding of the tech powering AI helps take the intimidation factor down a notch and makes it easier to work out where it can add the most value to your marketing.

Here’s how it helps:

1. Make Smarter Decisions

Knowing the basics of AI models or machine learning (even at a “101” level) means you’ll feel more confident choosing the right tools. You’ll be able to ask vendors the right questions about the tech powering the tools, rather than being distracted by whizz bang front-end features that might not deliver what you actually need.

2. Have Better Conversations Across Teams

Today, marketers often need to work with agencies, data teams, IT departments, or tech suppliers to plan and implement AI solutions. Having a basic grasp of the tech means you can communicate your marketing needs clearly and better understand what’s possible.

Plus, it keeps everyone on the same page, and talking the same language – super helpful to avoid potential misunderstandings or mishaps further down the track.

3. Know When (and When Not) to Rely on AI

No tech is perfect. AI tools might churn out impressive content or insights, but they can also miss the mark, delivering biased or inaccurate results. If you don’t understand the limitations, you could end up over-relying on these tools. Knowing when to trust the outputs—and when to keep human oversight in the mix—keeps your brand safe and minimises risks.

4. Spark New Ideas

Being tech-savvy doesn’t mean you need to code or build AI systems from scratch. It’s about knowing how to use tech to solve your specific marketing challenges and deliver better, faster results. When you understand the tech, it opens up lightbulb moments that lead to fresh ideas, improved ways of working, and better ways to connect with your customers.

5. It’s Less Scary When You Know What’s Behind the Curtain

AI might seem intimidating, but it’s much less daunting when you understand what’s happening behind the scenes. Just like knowing what the apps on your phone helps you get the most out of them, understanding the basics of the tech behind AI helps you to navigate the marketing landscape ahead.
