The biggest AI risk? Doing nothing.
Stephen Toms
I’ve spent year’s helping marketing teams get onboard with AI and here’s what’s rattling around in my head right now…
The smartest marketing teams aren’t sitting around debating if they should use AI—they’re figuring out how fast they can scale it.
But on the flip-side, many of the Leaders we chat with are stuck in AI limbo and it’s usually because of:
No AI roadmap
Teams have scattered efforts happening in silos—everyone is testing AI but there’s no overall plan for how it all fits together.
Tech Bottlenecks & Bans
There’s a list of “approved AI tools” list… but no one can explain why half of them are on (or off) it.
Policy paralysis
Teams find a great AI use cases—then whack… it get’s blocked with over-cautious policies that shuts it all down.
Â
And the cost of doing nothing?Â
It’s already bigger than most leaders realise and getting even bigger everyday.
1. Banning tools is a huge risk:
Banning AI won’t stop your team from using it. It just means they’ll BYO their own AI tools—”Shadow AI” is already a thing, and it’s a compliance nightmare.
2. The competitive gap is widening
Your competitors are using AI. Every day you hesitate, their marketing teams are getting smarter, faster, and more efficient.
3. Your top marketers m̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶t̶ (are already) looking elsewhere
Would you have stuck around in a team using outdated ways of doing things? Getting left behind is a real risk. If you keep blocking progress, they’ll be getting that resume updated quick-smart.
Â
So, what can you do? How can you move things forward.
- Listen to Your Teams
Find your highest-priority use cases where AI can actually help. Don’t start with tools, start with problems and look for real value. - Build Trust Through Champions & Training
AI adoption isn’t about tools—it’s about people. Find people to lead your AI initiatives, bring the team on the journey with you, invest in upskilling your team. - Create an AI Playbook
Move from “what not to do” to “how to use AI properly.” Make guidelines useful, not just restrictive. - Make Friends With IT
IT should be AI enablers, not gatekeepers. Invest in training for your team so they can justify AI investments -and show real ROI!

AI isn’t the threat. Standing still is.
